Painting One Room in Melbourne: What Changes the Quote

Bedroom showing walls, ceiling, skirting and built-in wardrobe beside a bed

A bedroom can look like a small painting job until you start listing everything in it. There are the walls, of course, but also the ceiling, door, frame, skirting boards and perhaps a built-in wardrobe. A quote for the walls alone covers a very different amount of work from a complete room repaint.

If you are comparing the cost of painting one room in Melbourne, start with that list. It will tell you more than the room name or a price advertised without any inclusions.

Decide which surfaces you want painted

Walk into the room and look at each surface separately. The walls might be marked while the ceiling still looks clean. Or the walls might be acceptable, with yellowed woodwork making the room feel tired.

Ask for the work you actually need. A useful request might be: “Paint the four bedroom walls, repair the old picture-hook holes and leave the ceiling and woodwork as they are.” If you are undecided, ask for the ceiling or trim as a separately priced option. That lets you compare the extra work without losing track of the original budget.

Wardrobes deserve a specific mention. Painting the outside doors does not automatically include shelves, internal panels or the wall behind stored clothing.

Floor size does not tell the whole story

Consider a simple rectangular room measuring 3 metres by 4 metres, with a ceiling height of 2.4 metres. Its floor area is 12 square metres. The gross wall area is 33.6 square metres before allowing for doors and windows: a 14-metre perimeter multiplied by the wall height.

That is a measurement example, not a priced job. It explains why multiplying the floor area by an unexplained painting rate can produce a misleading estimate. Openings also need cutting around, and a room with several doors can involve substantial detail despite having less wall area.

For the broader costs of repainting several rooms or a property exterior, see our house painting cost guide. A single-room quote still needs its own scope.

Small jobs still need setup and return visits

The time on site includes bringing in equipment, protecting surfaces, preparing the room and cleaning up. Some of that work is needed whether there is one room or several.

Repairs and coatings also have drying and recoating requirements. A painter may need to return rather than complete every stage in one continuous visit. For that reason, the price for one bedroom is not necessarily one-third of the price for three bedrooms.

Ask whether a minimum job charge applies and whether the quote includes all necessary visits. If you have another small area in mind, mention it before booking so it can be assessed at the same time. Adding it later can change the schedule.

Condition and access can matter more than size

A sound wall with a few small holes is different from one covered in thick DIY patches, lifting paint or adhesive marks. Photographs taken straight towards a wall can hide these differences. A second photo taken from the side, with daylight across the surface, often gives a more useful starting point.

Tell the painter whether the room will be empty. A large bed, fitted desk or heavy wardrobe may restrict access even after loose belongings are removed. Agree who will move furniture; do not assume heavy items are included in the painting price.

Colour changes matter too. The proposed system should allow for the existing colour and the finish you want. A fixed promise about coat numbers without assessing coverage is less useful than a clear description of the intended result and preparation.

Send a brief that can be priced

Include your suburb, approximate room dimensions, ceiling height if known, photographs and the surfaces you want painted. Mention repairs, furniture and your preferred timing. Say whether you want a similar colour or a substantial change.

You do not need to diagnose every mark before making contact. For interior painting in Melbourne, we can discuss what is visible and whether an inspection is needed before a written quote.

Ask about your room repaint or call 0493 440 810. Include the ceiling and woodwork in your message only if you want them considered, so the quote starts with the right job.
