A better starting point
A premium finish is decided before the first room is opened
A polished interior is not created by choosing colour alone. Natural light, existing coatings, wall condition, daily traffic and cleaning needs all influence the right preparation and paint system.
We inspect the rooms before recommending the scope. That helps separate a straightforward colour refresh from surfaces that need filling, sanding, sealing, stain blocking or a harder-wearing finish. Homeowners who want the technical detail can read our interior painting preparation guide.

The practical difference: your quote explains the work required to create the finish—not only the number of coats.

Room, surface and use
Natural light, condition and daily routines are considered together.

Surface decisions before colour decisions
A complete interior quote should explain where the finish begins
One interior can contain new plaster, existing low-sheen walls, patched areas, timber trim and moisture-prone ceilings. Each surface needs preparation and a coating system suited to its condition and use. Active leaks, recurring mould, suspected hazardous materials, structural movement or broad plaster failure must be assessed or resolved before coating. These conditions are outside a standard repaint and may require appropriately qualified or licensed specialists.
01
Walls
Marks, repairs, old touch-ups and existing sheen influence filling, sanding, priming and coverage.
02
Ceilings
Stains, cracks, old repairs and changing light can make preparation and low-reflection finish selection important.
03
Doors and trim
Frames, skirting, architraves and doors need compatible, harder-wearing systems and sharper detail.
04
Wet rooms
Bathrooms and laundries need sound, dry surfaces and finishes suited to moisture-prone conditions.

Preparation-led workmanship
The cleanest finish is built before the final coats.
Interior painting preparation Melbourne
The smoothest finish starts with the least glamorous work
Preparation is matched to the existing surface and the finish expected. Floors, furniture and adjoining areas are protected as stated in the written scope before suitable preparation begins. The quoted preparation level is based on visible and reasonably accessible conditions at assessment.
- Protect floors, furniture and adjoining surfaces as specified
- Fill minor holes, cracks and suitable imperfections included in the quote
- Sand suitable repairs and unstable coating edges to a sound transition
- Spot-prime bare, repaired or stain-affected areas where specified
- Caulk suitable gaps around trim where included
- Apply the specified coating system for consistent colour and sheen
Painting scope boundary: Minor filling, sanding, caulking and spot-priming may be included where stated in the written quote. Structural repairs, waterproofing, plumbing, electrical work, mould remediation, asbestos removal and major plastering are not included in a standard painting scope. Where required, those services must be assessed and completed by an appropriately qualified or licensed specialist.
Older or suspect materials: Suspected lead-based paint or asbestos-containing material will not be sanded or disturbed as part of a standard repaint. If a concern is identified, work in the affected area is paused while the risk is assessed and testing or specialist advice is arranged where required. Related work and costs are outside the quote unless expressly included in writing.
Colour, light and sheen
The same paint colour can feel different from one Melbourne room to the next
Morning light, shaded windows, warm flooring and artificial lighting can shift how a colour reads. Sheen also changes the way light moves across the surface and how easily marks can be cleaned.
Samples are most useful when viewed on more than one wall and at different times of day. For broader planning advice, browse our Melbourne painting guides.

Preparation and finish choices
Different surfaces need different preparation and finish choices
The highest sheen is not automatically the best finish. Condition, light, cleaning and touch frequency need to be balanced.
Wall systems
Walls and feature walls
Preparation and washable finishes matched to marks, repairs, traffic and lighting.
Low-reflection finish
Ceilings
Existing stains, repairs and changing light considered before the ceiling system is specified.
Durable detail
Doors, frames and skirting
Compatible harder-wearing coatings with careful edge preparation and clean lines.
Moisture-prone areas
Kitchens, bathrooms and laundries
Sound, dry substrates and suitable finishes for rooms exposed to moisture and regular cleaning.

Low-VOC and lower-odour product options can be discussed where suitable. VOC content, odour and application requirements vary by product. Selection must suit the assessed surface and intended use, with manufacturer instructions followed for application, ventilation, drying and re-entry.
A practical interior painting plan
Occupied, vacant or managed—each interior needs a different workflow
The scope can be staged around daily routines, an agreed target handover date or a documented approval pathway. Project dates remain subject to the written scope, access, surface condition, drying requirements and approved changes.
01
Lived-in home
Stage rooms, maintain access and plan around daily routines.
02
Pre-sale refresh
Prioritise visible wear, connected colour and an agreed target completion timeframe.
03
Rental turnover
Coordinate access, agreed preparation and a suitable easy-care finish.

Choose the level of change
Targeted refresh or complete interior repaint?
Both can be sensible. The right scope depends on condition, colour continuity and how the property will be used. Our Melbourne repainting guide explains the wear and surface-failure signs that can help inform that decision.
Focused refresh
A targeted refresh may suit
- One or two rooms show most of the wear
- Existing colours already connect well
- Ceilings and trim remain in good condition
- Work needs to be staged around occupancy
OR
Complete repaint
A complete repaint may suit
- Colours and sheen levels vary between rooms
- Walls, ceilings and trim have widespread wear
- The property is vacant or changing hands
- A consistent finish is the main priority

Quotes, visible conditions and changes: The written quote identifies the included rooms and surfaces, preparation, coating system, price and known exclusions. It is based on visible and reasonably accessible conditions at assessment. If additional work is requested or a materially different condition is identified, any proposed change to work, price or timing will be discussed and recorded in writing before the additional work proceeds or an additional charge is incurred.
One site visit, different priorities
One inspection can support four different client priorities
The quote conversation changes depending on who is approving the work and how the property is occupied.
Local planning can differ between occupied family homes in Ormond, units and townhouses in Bentleigh and shared-entry properties in McKinnon. Each needs an access, protection and room-release plan suited to the property.

How much does interior painting cost in Melbourne?
Cost depends on room size, ceiling height, surface condition, preparation, access and the selected paint system. We inspect the property and provide a clear written quote. For indicative ranges and the factors behind them, see our Melbourne house painting cost guide.
How long does an interior repaint usually take?
After assessment, a straightforward single-room refresh may take approximately one to two working days; apartments and whole-home repaints usually take longer. Unless expressly agreed otherwise in writing, project dates are estimates and can be affected by access, surface condition, drying requirements, product availability and approved scope changes. We will communicate material timing changes.
Can you paint while we are living in the home?
Often, yes. Feasibility depends on the rooms, access, household needs and selected products. Work can be staged, with agreed protection measures and lower-odour options discussed where suitable. Manufacturer ventilation, drying and re-entry instructions still apply.
Do you repair cracks and damaged plaster before painting?
Minor filling and painting-related surface preparation can be included where specified in the written quote. Major plastering, structural movement, active moisture, waterproofing failure and mould remediation are outside a standard painting scope and may require an appropriately qualified specialist before painting. Complex coating failures may require a restoration-focused painting assessment.
What happens if lead paint or asbestos-containing material is suspected?
We do not sand or disturb suspected lead-based paint or asbestos-containing material as part of a standard repaint. Work in the affected area is paused while the risk is assessed. Testing or appropriately licensed specialist advice may be required, and any related work or cost must be separately agreed in writing.
Do I need to choose colours before requesting a quote?
No. We can quote from the rooms, surfaces and scope first. Final colours and sheen levels can be confirmed before materials are ordered.
What paint brands and finishes do you use?
We specify professional paint systems, including Dulux products where agreed in the written quote. Product and finish selection depends on the assessed surface, intended use and required maintenance. Low-VOC options may be available where suitable.
Do you hold public liability insurance?
Yes. Call A Painter Melbourne holds public liability insurance for the quoted painting work. A current certificate of currency is available for review on request. Insurance is not a substitute for your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.
Which areas of Greater Melbourne do you service?
We provide interior painting across Greater Melbourne. Send us your suburb with your enquiry, or view our Melbourne painting service areas to check current coverage.
