Painting before you move in can make access easier, particularly when several rooms need work. The useful window begins when you have permission to enter and ends before the removalists need those rooms. Settlement, key collection and other trades all influence that window.
You can begin discussing a Melbourne interior repaint before settlement. The booking, however, needs to reflect confirmed access and the condition of the property when it becomes available.

Use the early inspection to gather information
At an authorised inspection, take a wide photograph of each room and closer photographs of visible damage. Include the ceilings and woodwork if you want those painted. Ask whether any wall-mounted items will be removed before handover.
Sales photographs are useful for recognising rooms, but they are not a reliable record of paint condition. Bright lighting, furniture and editing can hide marks or uneven repairs. A floorplan also says little about the state of the surfaces.
Give the painter the information you have and identify anything that remains uncertain. A preliminary estimate can be discussed before every detail is settled, provided its assumptions are clear.
Confirm permission and the key collection date
Ownership arrangements and early-access permissions are outside a painter’s control. Confirm them with the relevant parties before asking a trade to enter the property. Do not build the painting programme around access that has only been mentioned informally.
Tell the painter when keys are expected and whether you will be present. If settlement moves, pass that information on promptly. The availability of painters, flooring installers and removalists may not shift together.
Where possible, keep some flexibility between painting completion and moving day. The size of that allowance should be discussed for the actual scope, rather than based on a general promise that any home can be painted in a set number of days.
Choose the rooms that matter before furniture arrives
Bedrooms with large beds, living rooms with heavy furniture and narrow hallways can be harder to work in once occupied. Consider whether these should be completed during the empty period.
That does not mean every surface needs repainting. If the ceilings are sound, a walls-only scope may meet your needs. If the trim also needs work, include it from the beginning so it can be prepared and coated in a sensible sequence.
Our interior painting service covers the different areas that can be assessed. For this stage of planning, the key decision is which rooms must be ready before you move your belongings into them.
Coordinate flooring and fixed installations
Tell both the painter and flooring installer about the proposed work. Sanding timber floors, replacing carpet and fitting new boards create different scheduling needs. Skirting boards may be removed, replaced or left in place, which can change when their final painting should happen.
The same applies to wardrobes, air-conditioning work and electrical changes. Final wall painting is easier to plan when you know which surfaces will be disturbed later.
Ask the trades to agree on the handover between them. “Everyone can start on Monday” is not a workable plan if they all need the same room.
Agree on a room release plan
A completed room needs more than an empty paint tray. Confirm when protection will be removed, when the room can be used and how newly painted surfaces should be treated. Follow the selected product’s drying, ventilation and curing guidance.
If you must move in before all the work is finished, decide which rooms will remain available to you and which will stay in the painter’s work area. Keep the removalists informed so they do not fill an unfinished room with boxes.
A useful first message includes your suburb, expected access date, moving date, room list and any other trades. For an apartment, also mention lift bookings and building work hours.
Discuss your painting and moving dates with us before making the final sequence of bookings. We can assess the painting scope and explain what needs to be confirmed for it to fit your move.
